Keith Carrato of Nike, Inc. headlined the inaugural Discover Innovation @ UP Workshop , September 21, 2013. Thirty undergraduate UP students learned about design thinking as applied to social innovation, specifically Nike’s Designed to Move campaign.
“Keith’s presentation was simply great and he really shed light on how innovation happens at a place like Nike,” said Director for Innovation Eric Anctil. “We are so lucky to have an innovative company like Nike in our backyard. They are constantly evolving and innovating new products, of course. But they are also in the business of creating innovative social movements that change how people live. We saw that in the Designed to Move campaign and I think it really gave students an opportunity to see how change happens and how they might be able to be a part of that change.”
In addition to learning about Nike’s innovative efforts, participants also got a broad look at innovation and its transformative power in the marketplace from Assistant Business Professor of Marketing Ian Parkman. Through a rich set of examples and compelling data, Dr. Parkman gave an historical perspective on innovation that was then tied to the innovation occurring here in Portland. His message was straightforward: innovation is everywhere and you can access and see it in many ways.
Lunch, workshop activities, and great discussion rounded out a beautiful morning on the Bluff. Plans are afoot for future Innovation Workshops so watch this space for details soon.
